Did you know choosing a certain mode on your AC can affect the cooling and power consumption? Well if your answer is a ‘No’ then you will love what we are just about to tell you.

Technology has advanced, and so has the intricacy of electrical appliances.

Earlier, air conditioners only had a few modes- including the power on/off and temperature change functions. But nowadays, air conditioners come with a whole range of different modes that you can use for more comfort and savings. If you are confused about what some of these modes may do, your AC’s product manual will come in handy for you.

But if you are concerned about the variations in electrical consumption caused by a change in these modes, then you should first make yourself aware of how each of these modes function.

Air conditioners from different brands feature different modes or have different names for the same modes. Modes can also vary depending on whether you are using a window or split air conditioner.

In this post, we’ll cover the AC operation modes which are most common across brands and type of air conditioners.

Read on to learn more about how different AC modes can affect cooling and power consumption of your air conditioner:

1. Cool Mode

This is the default setting in every air conditioner. When you set the temperature on the AC in the Cool mode, the electrical consumption will vary according to the set temperature. The most suitable temperature in the AC that saves electricity as well as provides adequate comfort is the 25-degree mark.

Cooling: High | Power Saving: Moderate

2. Fan Mode

In this mode, the compressor of the AC does not run at all, but the fan does. Since the compressor is not running in this mode, it leads to a lot of savings in electricity; average power consumption being around 150 Watt. But this mode is not suitable for times when you want the space to be cool, because the fan alone cannot do that.

If you are concerned about the rising electricity bills because of air conditioners then apart from using an appropriate mode you should also follow these 9 easy tips to lower the power consumption of your air conditioner.

3. Power Saving or Energy Saver Mode

As the name itself suggests, some air conditioners come with a built-in energy saving mode. What happens in this mode is that the compressor of the air conditioner automatically switches itself off when the given temperature is reached. While in the normal cool mode, the fan keeps on running even when the compressor does not, in the energy saving mode the fan switches off as well. The electricity that was being used to keep the fan running is also saved. Also, the compressor runs for shorter durations of time, which saves consumption.

Cooling: Moderate | Power Saving: High

4. Quick Cool or Turbo Mode

This is probably the mode which consumes the maximum amount of electricity. The quick cool mode will bring the temperature of the AC down to 17 or 16 degrees. Obviously, the amount of electricity required to lower the room’s temperature to 16 degrees will be much higher as compared to 25 degrees. If you are keen on saving electricity, then you should avoid this mode as far as possible.

Cooling: Very High | Power Saving: Very Low

5. Dry or Monsoon Mode

Some people may not know about this mode at all, but it comes in handy at times, especially in places of high humidity. If the temperatures are low, but the air is humid, running an air conditioner in the cool mode will not be of much help. In this case, the Dry mode is useful. The fan operates at a low speed, while the compressor runs for shorter periods of time to ensure that humidity from the air is completely removed. On humid days, it is best to run the AC in the dry mode. It also saves electricity because both the fan and the compressor are on for little bursts of time.

Cooling: Low | Power Saving: High

6. Sleep Mode

The sleep mode is designed to keep the room temperature comfortable during your sleep and save electricity consumption. It also eliminates the need for increasing the temperature manually when you start feeling the chill after sleep.

When you put the AC in sleep mode, the temperature will increase by one degree every hour as you require less cooling while asleep. Different brands have different sleep mode settings, some brands increase the temperature by 0.5 degrees only.

Let’s understand this better with an example. You want to sleep for 8 hours, you set your AC’s temperature at 22 degrees before going to bed and turn on the sleep mode.

The AC will automatically increase the set temperature by one degree every hour. This makes sure that the room is not overcooled and you save plenty of electricity. Sleep mode also saves you from the hassles of changing the AC temperature or turning it on/off during the night which disturbs the quality of sleep.

However, if you are not keen about the rising temperatures, then the cool mode set at 25 degrees will provide you with the comfort you need.

Cooling: Moderate | Power Saving: High

An Easy Way to Ensure that your AC is Saving Electricity

When you run the air conditioner in the correct mode, you end up saving a lot of electricity. Choosing the perfect mode of cooling will eventually depend on your personal preferences, so choose wisely!

Sometimes, air conditioners can consume extra electricity because of a choked filter. You should regularly clean the AC filter or buy an air conditioner that has an automated filter cleaning function because this will ensure quicker cooling and lesser power consumption.
